Part 1: Orbit-uary Achievement Flame Leviathan Hard Mode 10 Player
Glory of the Ulduar Raider (10 Player) Guide
Rewards a Rusted Proto-drake
I wanted to start off with a common middle ground for people new to achievements and for those who are heavily acquainted with achievements. With badge gear being easily attained as a matter of constant grinding, these achievements should be easier for some while still retaining an overall difficulty for others during the Wrath of the Lich King to Cataclysm gap. I'm going to show you the ins and outs of obtaining these achievements. There is a lot of number crunching for these achievements but I'm going to simplify it while making sure you get all the information you need to know. This guide is written from the perspective that you know a little about Ulduar, but not enough that you could do this in your sleep or already have this achievement, otherwise, why would you even be reading this?
Welcome. This guide marks the first part of what I hope to be a long series of guides for Glory of the Ulduar Raider (10 Player) which still rewards a Rusted Proto-Drake..
This guide is distributed into parts and will be combined together at the end.
Part 1 Orbit-uary
Orbit-uary is a 4 part achievement that will net you 40 achievement points; 10 points for each Orbital Defense System Tower that is active.
I want people to know enough about the fight that, should they encounter difficulties, they could amend the strategy to fit their group's strengths and come out on top. If you need further guidance I suggest Wow Wiki's Flame Leviathan Tactics.
Starting the Event
Talking to Brann Bronzebeard at the entrance of Ulduar starts the event and keeps all towers inactive in normal mode. Talking to the Lore Keeper of Norgannon enables Hardmode.
It is at the beginning of the instance that you can easily accomplish the achievement above for a nifty 10 points. What you will do is have everyone simultaneously go down the ramp to the ground floor and stay either at the bottom of the ramp or at the mid point between the ramp and the first pillar. The 1 to 2 choppers, that you have up, will speed ahead and aggro mobs from the first pillar all the way back to the 2nd and 3rd pillar sweeping left and right to pick up all the groups. They will bring those mobs back to the group. It is really important that no one gets an itchy trigger finger. If someone shoots early and a mob dies, that triggers the timer, and you'll have to wait for it to reset and you will most likely not get this achievement. Once the aggro'd mobs have bunched up near your group, go crazy. Shoot at everything that moves, even shoot way far behind in case there are some stragglers. This achievement is all about timing, if those mobs finally run up to you and you hesitate, they will evade and reset to their original position.
After clearing straight forward past the pillars at the end and having not destroyed any of the four color coordinated towers, you will come to a group of adds with 2 Ulduar Colossus mobs in the back. Clear the beginning mobs without pulling the big mobs in the back. If you pull one it is okay as long as the other one hasn't been pulled. When the 2 Ulduar Colossus mobs are killed, Flame Leviathan will spawn. We'll come to that later.
- All vehicles should be ahead of the pillars but not far enough to pull the Colossus mobs. This is to prevent helicopters from spawning and constantly attacking from behind. You can repair vehicles as well by using the 2 circular green pads on the floor to the left and right of the room. Demolisher and Siege Engine Gunners should start to shoot down the blue Pyrite bottles flying overhead to build up Pyrite on the ground. It is important to start the fight with a great surplus of Pyrite.
- For the 4 towers up Hard Mode strategy, you will be using 2 Siege Tanks, 2 Demolishers, and 1 Chopper. A second Chopper can be used to clear trash and can be left safely in the area before the fight starts. You will be double loading 1 Demolisher for this strategy. The two people who should be loaded and launched onto Flame Leviathan should be ranged DPS.
- The best starting position for the Demolisher that is double loaded is the far right side corner when facing the gate. For some reason Pyrite seems to spawn more overhead there and can get shot down and concentrated in that corner. To double load a Demolisher have a DPS take the gunner seat. Have the gunner press load. Then have the second DPS take the gunner seat. You now have 3 people in the Demolisher.
- By pulling the last Colossus you will activate the boss. Flame Leviathan will come crashing out that gate and the fight will begin. It is important that everyone in the group knows what their job is. Every part of the fight hinges on "learning the dance" and executing it correctly.
The Flame Leviathan Hard Mode Abilities.
With Hardmode enabled and 4 towers up Flame Leviathan has a few new fight mechanics.
- The Tower of Storms enables an ability where multiple light blue beams will shoot down to the ground. Shortly after that lightning will strike that area dealing damage. It is important to avoid the damage from these.
- The Tower of Flames enables an ability where multiple fires will spawn from where Flame Leviathan entered the room and will spread across the room in a diamond pattern. It is important to avoid the damage from these.
- The Tower of Frost enables an ability where multiple blue beams with shine down and start following individuals. When it reaches its target it will stop, and freeze that target. If anyone is caught and frozen that person needs to be DPS'd out of the ice-block by other vehicles. There are two ways to avoid this. One by running and kiting the beam until it dissipates. The other way is staying still until the beam reaches you because once it stops you have about 1 to 1 1/2 seconds to move out of the way before it will freeze you.
- The Tower of Life enables an ability to spawn multiple plant-like elemental creatures. Those creatures can be slowed by Tar, and DPS'd down by the rest of the group.
When the fight begins Flame Leviathan will target a vehicle and chase them for 30 seconds. That person needs to kite the boss. Take careful notice that sometimes it is best to run straight into a corner and then pivot in another direction rather than moving diagonally or circularly around the boss. After 30 seconds there will be a 5 second warning as Flame Leviathan acquires a new target. It is better to run away from the boss during this time in case you get targeted next. You would rather have a better chance of surviving by running away than staying, continuing to DPS, and unluckily being the recipient of the next pursuit. Flame Leviathan will gain speed until the point where it is impossible to out run him. This is why causing a System Overload "Shut Down" is important.
Straight at the beginning of the fight, once the boss has become mobile, this is when the double loaded Demolisher will throw its passenger onto Flame Leviathan. You still need to aim at Flame Leviathan because it can miss if you are too far, too close, or not aiming in the right direction. The DPS who is launched will begin attacking the two Defense Turrets in front of them when they land. Once both turrets are destroyed Flame Leviathan will go into System Overload. He will take 50% more damage which is why it is important to have the maximum amount of Pyrite stacks on him. That DPS will be launched off and will parachute down for a chopper to pick them up. It is important to pick up your DPS'er as a Chopper otherwise they will die. The DPS will need to click on the Chopper to enter it. The Chopper will then bring them over to the designated Demolisher. That is when there will be a quick swap where the gunner will load up and the newly battle hardened DPS'er will hop from the Chopper into the Demolisher's Gunner seat. It is important for the 2 DPS'ers to keep picking up Pyrite for their Demolisher when they are swapping "seats". Once Flame Leviathan has come out of System Overlord it is time to Throw your next passengar aboard. In a perfect fight this swap and launch will only happen 2 to 3 times.
If you are one of the two players on launch duty and you successfully kill a Defense Turret, you will gain this achievement along with 10 achievement points.
Jobs
Its important that everyone is aware of what they need to do during the fight. Multitasking is key. It's a great idea for everyone to learn each vehicle's role in the fight so they can get a better overall picture because your first time doing this can be pretty hectic.
- Siege Tank Drivers:
- Be behind Flame Leviathan and DPS him during the fight. Interrupt Flame Vents, a fire AOE done by Flame Leviathan, by using Electroshock your number 2 skill. Never be in front of Flame Leviathan or you will take damage from his front Ram. If you are being chased you have an ability to Steam Rush and run quickly away from Flame Leviathan.
- Siege Tank Gunners:
- Shoot down Pyrite constantly for your fellow Demolishers. If there is no Pyrite in sight then you can DPS the boss. If there are plant adds up you should DPS those. If your driver is being chased by Flame Leviathan you have an ability called Shield Generator that will protect you from damage for a short amount of time. Coordinate with your driver so you both do not use your fail-safes at the same time.
- Demolisher Drivers:
- Always keep 10 stacks, the maximum amount of stacks, of Pyrite on Flame Leviathan at all times. If you are the designated double loaded Demolisher be aware of when you need to launch your passenger while moving around to survive the fight.
- Demolisher Gunners:
- It helps to not grab Pyrite until your driver is at 25 energy or below, otherwise you will be clipping off energy that is gained and making a waste of the Pyrite you have grabbed. If your driver is being pursued you have an ability called Increased Speed that you can use to get away from Flame Leviathan but it does cost Pyrite to use.
- Choppers:
- Lay down Tar every time it is up. Use it in front of Flame Leviathan and the Lashers to slow them down. During a Shut Down be aware that a DPS is getting thrown off and will be parachuting down. Make sure to find them, pick them up, and bring them back to their Demolisher. Have them call out or ping the mini-map if you need help. When not doing either of these things you can DPS the boss and adds with your Sonic Horn.
In short here is a summary of things that everyone should be doing during the fight: Avoid Flame Leviathan's Front Ram. Avoid Fire, Lightning, and Ice. Do not get Frozen. Shoot down and or load Pyrite. DPS Flame Leviathan and adds while managing Pyrite and launched DPS'ers. Sound easy eh? Don't worry though. You can still take a few Flame Vents or other abilities and still come out on top. You don't have to do it perfectly to have a chance at beating Flame Leviathan, just give it your all.
I would recommend this video which visual covers a lot of the topics discussed in a live setting. Click Here
